Luz Reyes-Martín

It has been an honor to serve on the Goleta Union School District Board for the last four years. As a product of public schools, I know firsthand the transformative power of education. I believe our schools should help all students achieve their greatest potential. I am proud to be an immigrant and the daughter of hard working parents whose sacrifices and encouragement made it possible for me to have greater opportunities. I am the product of Head Start and started my public K-12 education as an english learner – like many students in our Goleta School District.

Goleta is my home. I am a parent to two young children and an active volunteer in our community. I currently serve as the Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Santa Barbara City College. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University in Political Science and Chicano/a Studies, and Master’s Degrees in Public Administration and in Planning from the University of Southern California.

In my time on the School Board, my experience and involvement in our community have helped me be an effective leader, strong advocate for our students, and a fair decision-maker in matters that affect our school community. In 2017, I was elected to represent Santa Barbara County schools as a delegate to the California School Board Association. In this role, I directly advocate for legislation that is in the best interest of our schools – this includes full funding for schools and other student-centered policies.

While I have been on the Board, we have maintained a stable budget and adopted plans that will guide the continued success of our district in the years to come. I believe in fiscal responsibility and in seeking innovative and collaborative solutions to the challenges we may face.

As your school board member, my top priorities are to ensure that our schools are safe, our teachers and staff are supported and all of our students receive a high-quality education.
